Arctic Ovens

  1. Is the Arctic Oven tent an 'All Season' tent?
    a. Backed by over 60 years of experience in the heart of Alaska's wilderness, Alaska Tent & Tarp has put tremendous effort into developing and manufacturing the best all-season, “no compromise” tent available. The Extreme models come with windows installed in the door and the back wall, which allow adequate ventilation during the warmer months. What really sets the Arctic Oven apart is its superior performance in the cold months. Equipped with the option of having a stove inside the tent for warmth, most models of our Arctic Oven tent line can stay around 75 degrees F when it is -50 degrees F outside.
  2. What material is used in the manufacture of an Arctic Oven tent?
    a. The body of the Arctic Oven tent is made from Vapex™, a polypropylene fabric, made specifically for Alaska Tent & Tarp. It is a multi-ply, spun-bound composite with a huge water vapor transmission rate. Highly water repellant and extremely breathable, Vapex™ is the engine behind the Arctic Oven's condensation-free interior. The fly of the Arctic Oven tent is made from heavy duty 4oz coated oxford nylon.
  3. Is the Arctic Oven tent frame strong enough to hold heavy snow fall?
    a. The Arctic Oven tent has been tested in some of the most extreme conditions. We utilize rugged, thick-walled, drawn aluminum tubing and durable hub fittings for all of our Arctic Oven tent frames. The poles are shock corded with a sturdy Arctic grade bungee. We also have the option of upgrading your tent poles to the heavy duty pole set, which provides increased resistance to snow loads and high winds.
  4. What kinds of heating devises can you use in an Arctic Oven tent?
    a. We recommend the use of either cylinder stoves or sheet metal stoves that can burn wood, charcoal, and coal (for the cylinder stove option). Alaska Tent & Tarp carries several models of both the sheet metal stove and the cylinder stove at the Fairbanks and Anchorage stores. If these options do not work for your application, another common stove is an oil drip stove.
  5. Is the Arctic Oven tent difficult to set-up and take down?
    a. The Arctic Oven tent line has been designed to be intuitively simple and quick to set up. Even in adverse conditions, one person can handle the task. Please refer to the Tent Set-up Instructions page on this website for more information on how to set up your Arctic Oven tent.  You can also view our YouTube video demonstrating how to set up an Arctic Oven tent.
  6. How do I stake out my Arctic Oven Tent?
    a. Arctic Oven tents need to be staked down to keep them from blowing away. To stake down your tent body, erect the tent body and square it out to prepare it for your tent fly. Use stakes to stake down each webbing loop around the base of the tent. The number of webbing loops differs on the model, but there will be at least one loop on each side of the tent. Position the stakes so that the “J” hook catches the webbing and secures the loop so that it is tight to the ground. Once the tent body is staked down, drape the fly over the body and complete the same procedures of staking out the tent fly using the webbing loops on the fly.
  7. Do I need to use guylines on my Arctic Oven tent? How do I guy out my Arctic Oven Tent?
    a. If you expect to be in a high wind or storm situation, you will want to guy out your tent. Staking out the tent alone will not be adequate in these scenarios. All of our Arctic Oven tents have guy-out points along the upper corners of the tent frame. It is important that you guy out your tent at these points in severe weather. To guy out the tent, attach parachute cord to the guy-out points located at each corner. Stake the end of the parachute cord in the ground three or four feet from the edge of the tent. If staked too close, the wind can get under the tent and could cause an upward lift, causing the stakes to dislodge. It is recommended that you use two parachute cords on each guy-out point. Stake them out in opposite directions so that they are working together through opposition. If your tent has additional high wind tie outs on each of the side wall panels, attach parachute cord to each of these points and stake out as described above.
  8. What is the best way to clean my Arctic Oven tent?
    a. Clean your Arctic Oven tent by setting it up and wiping it down with a mild soap and lukewarm water solution. Liquid hand soap is adequate for the cleaning process. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely. Never use detergent, washing machines or dryers because they can damage the tent’s protective urethane coating and seams. After cleaning, allow the tent to completely dry, especially the seam areas, before storing or mold and mildew are likely to grow. Clean the zippers by dipping them in water and drying them off. It is important that you clean your zippers after camping in areas with sand and dirt. If you don’t clean your zippers, the slider will wear out and eventually, the teeth will become inoperable.
  9. Do I need to seam seal my Arctic Oven tent?
    a. Yes, we recommend that you seam seal your Arctic Oven tent before using it in wet areas. We include Kenyon Seam Sealer 3 with all of our Arctic Oven tent purchases. Read the instructions on the bottle before you begin the seam sealing process. Seam sealing should be done in a fully ventilated area. Set up your tent or lay it out flat. Make sure the seams are straight and taut to allow for even application of the sealer. Now, decide which seams need to be sealed. It is best to seal the seams that are exposed to rain, runoff, or ground level water. Apply the sealant to the inside and outside of all exposed seams. Apply the sealant in a straight line, evenly and liberally, into all needle holes. Several thin layers will work better than one thick layer. Allow one hour or more for the sealant to completely dry before storing the tent.
  10. How do I store my Arctic Oven tent?
    a. After you use your Arctic Oven tent, it is important that you hang out your tent to dry completely before you store it. If you do not allow your tent to dry completely, it will allow mold and mildew to form on your tent. It is recommended that you store your tent loosely rolled up and in a dry place.
  11. Can I order an Arctic Oven tent online?
    a. We have several of our Extreme model Arctic Oven tents available for sale online. The Arctic Oven Extreme models include a yellow fly, screen windows in the back wall and door, and additional high wind tie outs. Wall Tents

  1. What is the best material for a Wall Tent when used in damp areas?
    a. We recommend the 13oz DLX canvas, which is a Sunforger material. Sunforger is the premium canvas for tent construction. It is 13oz, double-filled, preshrunk marine-grade, fire-, water-, and mildew-resistant cotton canvas. The treatment applied to Sunforger does not inhibit the ability of the canvas to breath, allowing the use of Sunforger throughout the entire tent without condensation.
  2. What is the difference between a finished size and cut size?
    a. Finished size refers to the size of the Wall Tent after manufacturing is complete. Cut size refers to the size of the material that will be used to make the Wall Tent. For example, our sizes for Wall Tents represent the cut size, not the finished size. So, a 10'x12' Wall Tent is actually 9'3”x11'4” finished size. Make sure you take into consideration the finished size of your Wall Tent before you make or purchase a frame for your Wall Tent.
  3. Do you custom make all of your Wall Tents or do you carry some in stock?
    a. We generally carry a stock of Hunter Special Wall Tents for immediate pickup or shipment. Our most popular options are already installed: 10oz FR canvas, sod cloth, back window, zipper door, 41/2” oval stove jack, and a stove jack cover flap. Add a pin-in mosquito net and a Wall Tent fly from our stock and you get a great Wall Tent without waiting for a custom-built tent.
  4. How do you recommend I set up my Wall Tent?
    a. There are a variety of ways to set up your Alaska Tent & Tarp Wall Tent. We provide our customers with a handy overview of the more popular set-up methods, which include no pole set-up, three metal pole set-up, spruce pole set-up, log tent structure and metal frame set-up. We also provide instructions on how to set up a metal frame purchased from Alaska Tent & Tarp. Please refer to the Tent Set-up Instructions page on this website for more information on how to set up your Wall Tent.

Portable Fabric Structures

  1. What do I need to consider prior to ordering a Portable Fabric Structure?
    a. To prepare for a Portable Fabric Structure order, decide on the general size that you need. Our common sizes are 8, 10, 12 or 16 feet wide. Also, think about where the building is going to be used because temperature differential can be a problem. Make sure to place your order with enough lead time for us to manufacture your building. All of our portable buildings are custom made to your specifications.
  2. How long are your Portable Fabric Structures?
    a. Our Portable Fabric Structures can be any length you desire. For the Quonset-style portable buildings, the building lengths are in increments of three feet due to the arch spacing. For the double-truss style buildings, the lengths are in increments of five feet.
  3. How do I set up my Portable Fabric Structure?
    a. Alaska Tent & Tarp’s Portable Fabric Structures are designed to be simple to set-up and take down. Please refer to the Tent Set-up Instructions page on this website for more information on how to set up your Portable Fabric Structure.

Covers & Custom Projects

  1. What makes your tarps stand out compared to other tarps?
    a. Alaska Tent & Tarp carries high quality tarps made from durable materials, such as canvas and vinyl. These tarps can be used in almost any condition and will last much longer than the typical blue or green poly tarps. We also provide fire resistant tarps if the items you are covering require a fire resistant material.
  2. What is the difference between a finished size and cut size?
    a. Finished size refers to the size of the item after manufacturing is complete. Cut size refers to the size of the material that will be used to make the item. For example, our tarps are listed as cut sizes, so a 10’x12’ tarp refers to the size of the material. The finished size of a 10’x12’ tarp is 9’6”x11’6” due to the hem along the edge of the tarp. When you place an order for a tarp, make sure you specify what you would like the finished size of your tarp to be.
  3. Why do I need a winter front grill cover on my vehicle?
    a. Alaskans have used winter front grill covers for years as a way to cover their radiators when the temperatures drop below freezing. These covers dramatically reduce the flow of super-cooled air over the radiator and engine components, which will keep your engine and cab warmer during cold days!
  4. How do I place an order to have a grill cover installed on my vehicle?
    a. Having a winter or summer front manufactured and installed on your vehicle is easy. Just stop by one of our stores or give us a call to let us know the make, model and year of your vehicle. We carry patterns on hand for many of the recent model cars and trucks. If we have a pattern on hand, we will manufacture the grill cover within a few days and call you when it is ready for installation. If we do not have a pattern on hand, we will ask you to bring your vehicle in so we can pattern and manufacture a grill cover that is custom built to fit your vehicle. Please let us know of any after-factory modifications to the front of your vehicle, such as fog lights or a snow plow. We can install your grill cover for you or provide you with the hardware to install it yourself. We do all installations on a first-come first-serve basis. It takes between 20 – 30 minutes for the installation.
  5. What information does Alaska Tent & Tarp need to do a custom project?
    a. We pride ourselves on being a custom sewing shop and are proud of the talent and dedication our employees put into each project they complete. If you have an idea for a custom project, simply come into one of our stores or give us a call. Please consider some basic questions before contacting us:
    1. What is it that I would like to have produced?
    2. What function will this item serve?
    3. What conditions will this item be exposed to?
    4. How much use will this item get?
    5. What are the dimensions?
Once we have a good understanding of what you need, we will use our expertise to determine if we can produce a product that will be within the scope of your expectations of quality, time and cost.

Party Canopy

  1. What kinds of Party Canopies do you rent?
    a. We have two kinds of party canopies, each coming in three different sizes. The Alaska Tent & Tarp set-up canopies are a clear span, fully-framed canopy. The clear span canopy eliminates the need for poles inside the perimeter and allows more useable space beneath the canopy. We also carry customer set-up canopies that are erected by the customer. These canopies have center poles supporting the canopy peak, rather than a frame like the clear span canopies. Both kinds of canopies come in three sizes: 20’x20’, 20’x30’ and 20’x40’.
  2. How do I reserve a Party Canopy?
    a. Just give us a call or stop by our Fairbanks store to reserve a canopy. Reservations are taken on a first-come, first-serve basis and are limited to available stock. Each canopy rental is priced at a minimum of three days, with additional charges if you need the canopy for longer than three days.  Please notify our staff if the canopy is to be set up on pavement or on grass/dirt.  That will determine whether or not you will need to have cement blocks to stake down the canopy.  We will also need to know if you need side curtains with your canopy rental.  We carry a limited stock of both the side curtains and cement blocks and they are rented at an additional charge.
